With over 10,000 people dying from heart disease each year, Carrigtwohill Pharmacy supports the Irish Pharmacy Union’s stance that a national cardiovascular screening service is urgently needed. We have vast experience on the real threat this poses to our communities health and we are committed to taking an active role in educating, advising and treating all our customers to the highest standard of care.
The Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) is calling on the Government to introduce a National Cardiovascular Screening Service through community pharmacies. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the most common cause of death in Ireland, with approximately 10,000 people dying from it each year. Almost one in five people will develop heart failure at some point in their lives, but almost two-thirds are unaware of the risk.
Pharmacist Bernard Duggan said, “The introduction of this service through pharmacies could directly reduce the number of deaths from heart disease each year in Ireland. The average community pharmacy is open 50% longer than GP clinics, which increases the accessibility and cost-effectiveness of providing such a service for patients.
“We are calling on the Government to introduce a national screening service to support patients who may be at risk of developing CVD. The delivery of this service through pharmacies will not only save lives but will save money by reducing the need for expensive hospital care for those who are struck down with heart disease.”
Pharmacists are also available to assist patients who are on heart medication.
“There are a large number of different medicines for heart disease, depending on your situation. There are different guidelines for these medicines; some are better taken after food or at night. For examples, it is advisable to avoid grapefruit when on heart medications. Different medicines will have different side effects, so ask your pharmacist if you have any side effects or have any questions about the medicines you are taking,” Mr Duggan concluded.
If anyone has any questions relating to heart disease, it’s symptoms and what can be done to reduce the risk, please call into us here at Carrigtwohill Pharmacy. We are dedicated to our community and working to promote the health and well-being of our loyal customers. We are here to help. We are your community pharmacy.

IPU welcomes move to increase availability of medicines through pharmacies without prescription
17 July 2014: The Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) has welcomed the announcement today that up to 34 medicines previously available on prescription only could now be available from a pharmacist without prescription. Kathy Maher, President of the IPU, said that the move would greatly benefit patients by giving them better access to a wide range of medicines under the supervision of a qualified pharmacist. The IPU, which represents 2,100 community pharmacists across the country, has been calling for this move for a number of years.
Ms Maher was responding to the publication today by the Health Products Regulatory Authority (HPRA) of a list of active substances used in various medicines which they recommend should be reclassified from prescription-only medicines to over-the-counter medicines.
Welcoming the announcement, Ms Maher said, “This is a landmark move to improving public health. Pharmacies are the most accessible part of the healthcare system and this announcement is a step towards utilising pharmacists’ knowledge and expertise, for the benefit of the patient. This is another step in meeting the Government’s own healthcare strategy of treating patients in a community setting.”
The HPRA list includes medicines for the treatment of migraine, acid-reflux symptoms, hay fever, cold sores, muscle pain and inflammation, fungal skin and nail infections and other inflammatory skin conditions.
A survey carried out earlier this year by Behaviour & Attitudes on behalf of the IPU showed that 70% of people strongly agreed that pharmacists should be able to prescribe some medicines for minor ailments.
“The reclassification of medicines is significant in the self-care agenda in assisting patients to manage their own health and wellbeing with the professional advice of their pharmacist. Broadening the range of medicines available to patients is a step in the right direction to facilitating the effectiveness of self-care and self-medication,” Ms Maher concluded.

All the team in Carrigtwohill Pharmacy would like to extend a massive thank you to all those wonderfully generous people who supported and sponsored Ger who completed the Cork City Marathon during the June Bank Holiday weekend. (In style might we add).
This marathon was very special as Ger was running in aid of Cork Simon Community & Shine Ireland. Both are very worthwhile charities and all the donations made were greatly appreciated and will help to make a valuable difference to these charities.
We are delighted to announce that we raised an incredible €2,000! This amazing amount made all of Ger’s aches and pains after the marathon all worth it.

16 June 2014: Pharmacists today highlighted the need for parents to be extremely careful about giving medicine to children and to always seek the advice of their pharmacist first to determine the correct medicine and the correct dose appropriate to their child’s age and symptoms. Pharmacists are warning never to give a child a medicine that is meant for an adult and never give a child two types of medications which contain the same ingredients to avoid a possible overdose or dangerous interaction. Pharmacists also warned about the dangers of providing medicines to young children in order to sedate them during long journeys or get them to sleep at night.
Bernard Duggan, Pharmacist and Honorary Treasurer of the IPU, said, “It is important to ensure the safe use of both over-the-counter and prescription medicines as some medicines are only suitable for adults and not for children. Medicine dosages for children should be adjusted according to the age and weight of the child. Too little medication can be ineffective and too much medication can be harmful. Also, different medications have different concentrations of ingredients. The best approach is to ask your pharmacist first for advice.”
The following advice is a guideline for parents when giving medicine to a child:
• Do not use medicines to put children to sleep during long journeys or at night.
• Be sure you are giving the right medicine and the right amount. Check with your pharmacist first.
• Read and follow the directions on the label. Never give the medicine more frequently than recommended by your pharmacist or doctor.
• Always use a 5ml spoon or dosage syringe provided with the medication. Never guess the dose.
• Follow age and weight limit recommendations. If the label says don’t give to children under a certain age or weight, don’t do it.
• Make sure the child takes all of the medicine each time it is given.
• Check with the pharmacist first before chilling or crushing medicine as this could alter the effectiveness of some medicines.
• Do not give aspirin to children under 16, unless it is specifically prescribed by a doctor.
• Store medicines in a cool dry place and well out of the reach of children, preferably in a safe location.
Parents are also advised to always inform their pharmacist if their child has any allergies or is taking any other medication.
“If a parent notices any adverse side effects having given their child medication (other than that outlined by their pharmacist) such as a rash, hives, vomiting or diarrhoea or has trouble breathing or swallowing, they should seek immediate medical assistance,”concluded Mr Duggan.
